Abstract

This talk will give an overview of the research of III-nitride based visible light-emitting diodes (LEDs) from the KAUST Energy Conversion Devices and Materials (ECO Devices) Laboratory (https://ecodevices.kaust.edu.sa/Pages/Overview.aspx). III-nitride based visible LEDs have achieved tremendous success in the field of solid-state lighting and dominated the lighting markets in the past decades. This technique becomes mature, and the luminous efficacy of LED devices approaches the theoretical maximum limit. So what is the next story of visible LEDs beyond solid-state lighting? Nowadays, many applications in wearable/portable devices (augmented reality, watch and mobile) and digital displays (4K TV, auto display) exhibit explosive growth and attract significant attention. These display applications require two typical features for nitride-based visible LEDs: miniaturization and integration. We will look at the definition of the two features, describe their challenges, and give an overview of new techniques that we have developed for the miniaturization and integration of nitride-based visible LEDs.

Brief Biography

Zhe Zhuang is a Postdoctoral Fellow at Energy Conversion Devices and Materials (ECO Devices) Laboratory in CEMSE/ECE. He received his PhD degree in Electronic Science and Technology from Nanjing University, China in 2016. During the period of his Ph.D, he studied as a visiting student at University of Sheffield, UK. His research interests are in the area of III-nitride semiconductors and their optoelectronic devices, especially MOVPE growth, nanofabrication and novel III-nitride nanophotonics. He has published 32 journal articles and 5 of them are selected as research highlight/back cover/Editor’s pick in Advanced Functional Materials, Nanotechnology and Applied Physics Letters.
